R. Hempelmann analyses those Ancient Near Eastern cylinder seals of the 3rd millennium BCE which depict divine boats with anthropomorphic prows and those which depict the building of zikkurrats. The study explores the iconographic realm of these motifs considering accompanying motifs such as ploughs, snakes and scorpions in case of the divine boats and anthropomorphic figures in case of the zikkurrats. Special emphasis is devoted to chronological questions and the various styles of the cylinder seals.
