C. Mittermayer examines the development of third and early second millennium BC Sumerian cuneiform signs which depict animal heads. Each of the 15 signs is studied within its diachronic evolution as far as it is attested in Uruk, Archaic Ur, Fara, Ebla, Lagash and Early Old Babylonian contexts. The study is supplemented by extensive sign lists, a diachronic ranging from Early Dynastic II to Old Babylonian and a synchronic Old Babylonian.
