S.K. Huh provides the reader with a detailed overview of the excavations in the region of Lagash, mainly conducted by E. de Sarzec, G. Cros, H. de Genouillac and A. Parrot. Published as well as unpublished excavation reports have been puzzled together to reconstruct the architectural remains of the various sites (Tello/Girsu, al-Hiba/Lagash, Surgul/Nina, Medain) and to contextualize thousands of objects, among them several of utmost importance for the history of Ancient Near Eastern art. The study is supplemented by comprehensive and extensive catalogues of excavated objects and also contains the previously unpublished report of R. Koldeweys excavations in Surgul, el-Hiba, Nina and Lagash updated by A. Haller and B. Kienast.
