The terminology used in the Old Testament (chapter 3), words, actions and various materials used within the magical performances (chapter 4), and magical practices mentioned in the Old Testament (chapter 5) are analysed in detail: Far from beeing simply taken over from other Near Eastern religious spheres, magic played an important role within the daily life and the religion of Ancient Israel and cannot be considered to be a mere "survival". Polemics in the Old Testament were not directed against all kind of magic, just against "Schadenzauber" and other unauthorised forms (chapter 6). Chapter 7 offers an overview of a history of magic on the Old Testament in diachronic and synchronic perspectives.

Annexed are contributions to other ta-infixed verbal stems of Akkadian.

               O. Loretz examines the fields of justice and judgment in human and divine spheres within Ancient Near Eastern civilizations, mainly focused on Syria (Ugaritic texts) and Israel (Old Testament). Chapter 1 deals with divine, chapter 2 with the ancestors’ judgment upon humans. Chapter 3 contrasts ideology and reality of the concept of the "King of Justice." Further chapters are devoted to philological and historical studies of the Amorite-Canaanite tradition of justice.

               2004. xiv + 409 pp. (ISBN 3-934628-19-2) EUR 78,- 39,- EUR

J.F. Diehl analyses those imperatives within the Hebrew Bible which are continued by other imperatives (chapter 2), by imperfects (chapter 3), by perfectum consecutivum (chapter 4) or by imperfects that are seperated from a preceding waw by a further element ("w.x.imperf") (chapter 5). These various kinds of continuations might be considered as implicit hypotactic and are confronted with explicit hypotactic constructions (chapter 6). Within chains of clauses that consist only of imperatives or of imperatives and imperfects the emphasis is on the last element of the chain; whereas in those chains that consist of imperativs and perfectum consecutivum, emphasis is on the imperatives. Chains ending in "w.x.imperf"  might emphasise the first or the last clause.
